Resources for legal professionals

Undue influence is a legal term, used to establish culpability in a number of different scenarios. From fraud to land ownership, criminal cases to civil disputes, undue influence can, and will often, be a contributing factor.

The law varies widely around the world, with different legal systems establishing their own legislation. We are currently in the process of creating an up-to-date database of all the different laws; in the meantime, below are some resources which law professionals may find useful. For other useful resources that are not specifically legal, please use our recommended reading list

BOOK: When Prayer Fails: Faith Healing, Children, and the Law

Cults / Sects Extremism - religious or political Abuse / Child Abuse

Author: Shawn Francis Peters

Publisher: Oxford University Press; 1 edition (November 14, 2007)

ISBN: 019530635X / 978-0195306354

Synopsis:

Relying on religious traditions that are as old as their faith itself, many devout Christians turn to prayer rather than medicine when their children fall victim to illness or injury. Faith healers claim that their practices are effective in restoring health - more effective, they say, than modern medicine. But, over the past century, hundreds of children have died after being denied the basic medical treatments furnished by physicians because of their parents' intense religious beliefs. The tragic deaths of these youngsters have received intense scrutiny from both the news media and public authorities seeking to protect the health and welfare of children.

RESOURCES: Polygamy and Trafficking

Human Trafficking

The Polygamy and Trafficking website is a digital information centre, encouraging awareness and education on the issue of religious coercion and demonstrating the personal risks they can create. It was established by Christine Marie Katas, who is a survivor or polygamy and human trafficking, as a result of her familial 'religious' beliefs. Christine is particularly passionate about highlighting the link between religion and human trafficking, as religious leaders 'legally' exploit individuals, using undue influence to manipulate and oppress, and create hierarchies of unquestioning obedience.
