We’re posting this film from our archives because it’s a good “general” overview of how cults work. Though some of the elements might be viewed as “over the top,” it works on many different levels, showing the basic thought reform criteria and encompassing most of the best behavioral models of mind control, without mentioning any group specifically. Made by filmmaker Carey Burtt in 1999 on 16mm film, with a whimsical, surreal approach and a “rough and ready” feel, this has become a much-referred-to classic, and is a personal favorite from our collection.

What do you think about this movie? Do you agree? Do you have a story about cults that you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you!
