Why is Undue Influence Dangerous?

Undue Influence is far-reaching, subtle and present in almost all aspects of society. As you can see from our page ‘Undue Influence in Action’, the application of social, physical or emotional pressure occurs in a wide range of situations.

The single most dangerous aspect of undue influence is its use to manipulate individuals to act against their own better interests. From retirees losing their hard-earned savings for "quack" medicines or stock scams, to a spouse staying in an abusive marriage, or even to the extremes of an idealistic university student turned suicide bomber, undue influence is applied to limit the choices for individuals, helping the manipulators to achieve their own agendas with no consideration for the safety or wellbeing of the victims.

At a basic level, this has emotional and physical impacts on the victim and the victim's family; on a larger scale, it also impacts on society. In many cases the outcome extends beyond the intended victim, to impact the lives and livelihoods of many other unrelated and innocent people in the community.
